When we think of vehicle cameras, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the rearview camera a feature that became mandatory in U.S. vehicles starting in 2018. But in recent years, front-facing cameras have gained popularity and are quickly becoming just as important for drivers who want greater safety, convenience, and control.

How It All Began

Front cameras were first introduced in the luxury vehicle segment during the late 2000s and early 2010s. Brands like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Lexus began experimenting with forward-facing cameras as part of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The goal wasn’t just visibility it was also to support features like:

• Parking assist in tight urban spaces

• Collision detection to help prevent accidents

• Adaptive cruise control with camera-guided sensors

At first, these cameras were reserved for high-end trims or expensive models. For everyday drivers, the idea of a front-facing view on the factory screen was still out of reach.

Companies That Provide Camera Sensors for Automotive Cameras

The camera sensor is the heart of a vehicle’s camera system. These are not made by the automakers themselves, but by specialized semiconductor companies. Some of the leading suppliers include:

• Sony Semiconductor Solutions – One of the biggest players, especially with their CMOS image sensors widely used in ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) and surround-view cameras.

• OmniVision Technologies – Strong in automotive-grade image sensors, including HDR (high dynamic range) sensors that handle bright sunlight and low-light conditions.

• ON Semiconductor (now onsemi) – Major provider of automotive CMOS sensors, especially for rearview, surround, and driver monitoring cameras.

• STMicroelectronics – Known more for LiDAR and ToF (time-of-flight) sensors, but also supplies some imaging solutions.
